Welcome To Junkyard Rocket

May 12th, 2007 by Ryan

Hello everyone! I have a blog! Again. This isn’t my first attempt at this, but I think this one is going to last awhile. As I get older, I find I have more things to say and more ideas to express that can only be done with Web 2.0. Just like it was meant to be. Don’t bother looking for those old websites of mine. They don’t really exist.

So, just who am I? Well, My name is Ryan and I am getting my Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in Artificial Intelligence in games. I am a geek. I love video games, computers, cartoons, scifi and fantasy, giving shit about DRM, and a bunch of other crap.

And what’s with the name Junkyard Rocket? That name comes from a conglomeration of wishes, inspirations, and other nerdly pursuits. I like scifi, especially that set in space. Flying through space with nothing to rely on but your crew, your ship, and that this job will be the one that finally pays off, is a story that really appeals to me. Think Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon or Captain Mal and Serenity. Both those those captains were scrappers, getting by on ingenuity and just a bit of luck. Look at the crap vessels they had too. At one time they were fine ships, but now they are older, heavily modified, in constant need of repair, but after years of blood and sweat pored into them, those ships are as much a part of their souls as anything. Yet more examples are Sid from Final Fantasy VII and Zefram Cochrane from Star Trek: First Contact. Both of these men had a dream so powerful, they built their respective ships anyway that they could. They didn’t have the money or the support but they got the job done.

A junkyard rocket is about having a dream and going for it despite what life deals you. Whatever will fly. And that is the last inspirational bullshit you’ll see on this site. From here on out, it’s blue humor, rants about the man, and geek crap. You have been warned.
